In 1997 I traveled throughout Europe creating a daily collage that captured the essence of the day's events, mood, or environment. The process of building an image from found paper prompted me to look at my discarded color trial proofs and other print outtakes as potential building blocks for new pieces. For collaged monotypes I combined a number of Marking Time prints with monotype elements. I physically collaged the prints first, looking for intriguing relationships. Monotype on top of the collage develops the space and unified the work. The juxtapositions, transparent overlays of ink, shifts in space, grid-like structure, and implied narratives all help to further convey the sense of time's passage.
